Grace's Dad and the Ignorant People
As Tom was getting ready to hold a meeting at work last week, he heard the words 'Chinese' and 'Adoption' come from the TV that was playing in the background. That always makes us stop and listen, so he paused for a moment to watch the TV. What he saw was the story of Gong Lu on the Today Show (click the links for more info on this touching story). While the Director of Gong Lu's orphanage was speaking to the translator in Chinese, one of Tom's employees starts mocking her and makes a derogatory comment about Chinese people. Tom spun around and asked the guy to repeat himself, which of course he didn't, but just looked at Tom blankly until Tom said "My daughter is Chinese". You could have heard a pin drop as the people who knew about our adoption watched the uncomfortable interaction that was taking place. Suffice it to say that Tom had a few other words to say in educating this ignorant idiot.
We're beginning to see the ignorance all around us, whether it be from people thinking they know everything about Chinese adoption or comments about Chinese people in general. And the word 'chink'...that word cuts like a knife. I've always been quick to correct people when I feel that something has been said that could potentially offend our daughter and clearly offends us, and Tom would just leave that to me. But lately, I see the protectiveness that he feels over his child, and I can't help but be proud of that. He's ready. He's ready to be Grace's dad and I pity the fool who ever hurts her.

Excellent. Kudos to Tom.
Well Done Daddy!
Monica
And fatherhood has already begun....
Way to go Tom!
Way to go Dad. Some people do have to learn things the hard way. Sounds like Tom is going to be an excellent teacher!!!
Yeah Tom!!! Good for him. What an awesome Daddy he is!!! The "Chink" word always gets to me. One of my best friends DH kept calling Delaynee "Chinky." He honestly thought it was a cute nickname. I asked him several times to please DO NOT call her that, but when he kept on the Mama bear in me came out! I really let him have it and told my BF that if he continued to call her that, I would not be coming back around and I didn't want ANY thing to ever do with him again. He later apolized and said that he didn't mean it in a bad way -- he thought it was cute. Cute -- come on!!! There is nothing cute about calling someone "Chinky"
Good for you Tom!!!
I always freeze when someone says something and I have the hardest time replying coherently.
I can't stand ignorant people. Good for Tom.
Unbelievable. Good for Tom for sticking up for your family.
You go Tom, with your bad-ass self!!!!!!!
Here's to a proud and protective dad...I think Tom definitely has what it takes!
I haven't had to deal with comments or remarks like this yet. So far everyone has only been very positive, at least to my face. Sometimes I do wonder what people think...but who cares anyway, right?
Glad he said something. Hate to say, but just because "we" as adoptive parents get sick of hearing stupid comments, they don't end.
Hey, tell Tom that the idiot at work must have a twin brother that works in my office!!! Good for Tom. Good for me cause I just had to blast my co-worker for being I%#&*#&@ A$$^@ about Mexican/Immigrant population in our area. I don't dare repeat the conversation but I do know that I embarrassed him tremendously infront of our co-workers (as was my intent) and told him that maybe he should think before he speaks next time along with a few other comments! Some people!
I like Tom and I haven't even met him. Way to go Tom!!!!!!
Rock on dude..lol..Go Tom!!!! Tell 'em!
I had someone ask me the other day "so you got one of those throw aways too?" It's amazing what can come out of someone's mouth! Amy
Tom - You made a bunch of us proud and helped to remind all of us to speak up for those being pushed down.
You're a good man...
Ignorant people make me so angry! I hope when I'm face to face with one of them, I can react calmly, you know, without punching them in the face!
Hats off to Tom!
You go Tom! Love your spirit. I heard a saying not long ago that went like this....
Some say blood is thicker than water.......I say LOVE is thicker than blood.
Tom, you were a great example of that today.
