Macho, Macho Man

Our Golden Retriever, Casey, will be 7 years old in December. We are finding it very odd that in the last few months he has just begun lifting his leg when he pees. It's like all of a sudden he realized that he's a man. Every time we go outside, he pees no less than 10 times and lifts his leg each and every time, whereas he used to be a squater. He particularly likes to lift his leg on trees and branches, but is even happy to lift his leg in the middle of the yard. He's not a picky leg-lifter.

We've noticed this behavior since Lucinda Basset came home last winter and can't help but think...is this change of behavior because of her? If our theory is correct, then it must be true...there's nothing like a good woman to make you feel like a man!

I hate telling people stuff about their dogs because I hate to sound like a know it all but since you asked........ :)..... Leg lifting is a dominant canine behavior. Since Casey was the only dog before, not much need for him to display dominant behavior unless he wanted to be dominant over you guys and I'm guessing since he's a Golden Retriever he didn't want to. Not their nature. With his little sister coming home someone had to be alpha dog of the pack and since he was #1 the first dog living there, #2 the older dog, and #3 the male, it was natural that he stepped into that role. One display Casey has available to him to let Lulu know who's in charge is hiking his leg.

Personally, I like your theory though!

Thanks for that information, Jac. It makes total sense. Casey is very submissive to LuLu and basically lets her rule the roost. Maybe this is the one area he can show dominance.

And no, you don't sound like a know it all...just very in-the-know.
