44 lbs? Are They Kidding?

Okay, Grace's suitcase is packed. But there ain't no way it weighs the allowed 44 lbs. I still have to pack our suitcases, and if there's enough room and we're under-weight, we'll take some things from hers and add to ours. I must say, packing has totally stressed me out...perhaps that's why I put it off 'til the last minute.
For those who have BTDT, did you have to pay overage fees? If so, how much are we talking here?

I'm gonna be checking your comments for answers here. I'm loving that you have to do this first. Very helpful for me!
Is your airline allowing you to bring an extra suitcase for Gracie? That's cool! We're only allowed 1 checked suitcase per person, and the twins aren't with us until the third flight, so we had to get everything in two bags. Whew!
Yep, I'm the Guinea Pig, Jac! Wish me luck!
M3...No, we're only allowed to check 1 bag per person also. We're taking a small pilot's case on-board and I'm going to try to get as much into that as possible.
Warning: marathon answer to follow:
Overage fee: Yes. I pimped my story and I pimped it hard when we checked in for the first leg of our flight. The only thing the United ice princess had to say was "Are you going to pay in cash or with a credit card?" Thanks for the support. In China your luggage will be weighed with your group and I was so hoping United would let us do that b/c we packed a seabag like the military uses as it weighs hardly anything and it's canvas so it's durable and I figured if it went to Iraq and back surely to goodness it'll go to China and it did. However, since we were going into a communist country, we bought a black one that had no military markings whatsoever. Anyway, I jam packed it and it weighed 36 lbs. In my big suitcase it weighed closer to 50. But, with the 2nd bag, if I was going over I was going over and get my money's worth and it was about 67 lbs. When we left Beijing for Chongqing, we were weighed as a group and were either underweight or our guide smooth talked and got us away with no fees. Leaving CQ was a different story. Some people did ALOT of shopping and since we had clothes, etc. for the orphanage we left in CQ, our bags (us as a family) were within the weight limits. But, as a group we had to pay and ended up paying 50 yuan per family (roughly $6.25 USD) and since we had to pay it, we checked everything we could - including a bag we bought in CQ. Once you leave Guangzhou you are good to go with your 2 bags per ticketed seat b/c it is the first leg of your international flight.
Whew, sorry for the marathon answer and I hope it helps someone somewhere. I highly recommend the sea bag for clothes. It's not good luggage you have to worry about ripping, it's super durable and you get more stuff in it. We only used ours for clothes and used the suitcases for treasures that needed more protection. We bought ours at the Army Navy Store in town for $17 and well worth every penny. I bought the med. size and could have packed much more in the large one. You can also order them from an Army Navy Store online.

Don't forget the Cheerios!!!
As Tony Little always says on his "infomercials"... YOU CAN DO IT! :-) I can't wait to follow your journey to Grace
LOL Susan, I had to take the Cheerios out. It was either that or the Doctor recommended Gatorade. Hydration wins!
