Stupidity: Then and Now

You know, it really blows my mind at some of the blatantly ignorant and stupid things people have the nerve to say, and during the adoption process we really cam across some doozies. My favorite of which came from someone who said that the long flights to and from China should be considered my "labor pains" since I'm not giving birth. Bite me. What should countless years of infertility and miscarriage, not to mention the roller-coaster ride of 'the adoption wait', be considered? That's not painful enough? Then there are the people who feel the need to inform you that adoption is really expensive. Well, no crap. Our bank account shows the carnage. And another thing - everyone and their brother knows someone who's adopted and everyone's an authority. The funny thing is, very seldom do these know-it-alls have their facts straight. What's even better is they have the audacity to argue their misinformed information with someone who's actually been through it.

This morning Tom and Grace went to the grocery store and they had the good fortune of getting into the line of a cashier that I avoid at all costs. She never shuts up and she's an authority figure on everything. After asking a million questions about Grace and spewing her knowledge on adoption, she asks Tom, "are you going to tell her she's Chinese?". Well of course we're being open with her about her adoption and the fabulous culture that is a part of who she is, but the first thing that came to my mind is; gee, do you think she'll notice she's Chinese? I mean after all, she's not blind.

Dumb. Ass. Here's your stupid-sign.

You should tell her you are going to get Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon to "fix" her Chinese features so she'll never be none the wiser. Or better yet, ask her if anyone has ever told her she's a nosey, mouthy bi*&@. Okay I'll be nice now.

Heh. I love your "carnage" word. Perfect. And don't you just LOVE when the freakin' experts, who "know" someone who adopted, argue with YOU! The person going through the process. Continues to amaze me. Every single time. Happened today at work, actually.

Anyhoo......... I feel your pain.

You got it in that post.

I get the arguments about how I must have a lousy agency because so-and-so 'knows' several people who have adopted from China recently and it only took about 4 months to get their 3 month old daughter! Bwah! Give me the stupid stick.

Your hubby should have jumped back and sarcastically exclaimed, "Oh my God, that's what's wrong with her!!! I hadn't realized that till now."

Or, he could have said, "that was an incredibly dumb thing you just said, ya know?"

I'm with Jacquie-"carnage" is a great word! It's been almost a year and I swear our bank account is still smoking.

I love the "are you going to tell her" people. I'm so pale I glow in the dark and have blonde hair and blue eyes. Of course we're going to tell her. But if I'm feeling snarky and on edge I ask "Do you think we should? I mean, it's a lot for her to handle. You know, being adopted and all.

sheesh.

Your post made me laugh - but in reality, the comments are funny (just entertaining the way your wrote it). My all time favorite, personally speaking, was the time I was asked by a family friend "My God, how are you going to get her home from China?"

Another wonderful reply could have been "absolutely not, and we won't possess any mirrors either to give it away".

Just a thought

Is this what I have to look forward to after all this?
